# Universal Hex Taxonomy: 32 Canonical Traits
The UHT encodes meaning using a fixed 32-bit structure. Traits are binary (present/absent), layered (grouped by semantic domain), and composable (defining identity through combinations). The traits are divided across four layers:
---
## 🧱 Physical Layer (Bits 1–8)
Describes tangible, sensory, and structural properties.
1. **Physical object** – Exists in physical space; has a tangible presence.
2. **Man-made / synthetic** – Created or manufactured by humans.
3. **Biological or biologically-inspired** – Originates from or mimics biological systems.
4. **Fixed / static** – Positionally or structurally stable; does not move or change on its own.
5. **Structural** – Provides physical support or forms a framework.
6. **Perceptible** – Detectable via human senses or standard instruments.
7. **Material form** – Has substance or matter; not purely energetic or informational.
8. **Passive** – Does not initiate action or change autonomously.
---
## ⚙️ Functional Layer (Bits 9–16)
Captures purpose, action, and systemic roles.
9. **Purposeful / intentional** – Exists to fulfill a function or goal.
10. **Emits output / produces effect** – Actively produces signals, forces, or outcomes.
11. **Processes or regulates logic/signals** – Alters or routes information, energy, or materials.
12. **Transforms or modifies internal state** – Changes internally in response to stimuli or input.
13. **Interacts with humans directly** – Has direct user-facing or human-engaging behavior.
14. **Part of a larger system** – Operates within or depends on a broader configuration.
15. **Autonomous in function** – Acts independently once initialized.
16. **System-critical** – Essential to the function, integrity, or survival of a system.
---
## 🧠 Abstract Layer (Bits 17–24)
Represents conceptual, logical, and symbolic characteristics.
17. **Symbolic / representational** – Stands for or encodes something else.
18. **Communicative** – Designed or used to convey information.
19. **Logical / rule-based** – Follows structured rules or formal reasoning.
20. **Hierarchical / modular** – Organized in nested or compositional units.
21. **Behavior-guiding** – Influences actions, decisions, or responses.
22. **Self-referential / meta-conceptual** – Refers to itself or to concepts about concepts.
23. **Temporal** – Exists or changes over time; involves sequencing or duration.
24. **Contextual abstraction** – Derives meaning based on situational or domain context.
---
## 🧬 Social Layer (Bits 25–32)
Covers societal, cultural, and interpersonal dimensions.
25. **Socially / culturally constructed** – Defined or shaped by collective human norms or traditions.
26. **Defined by a group/system** – Its identity arises from membership or classification.
27. **Linked to identity or role** – Tied to personal, social, or institutional roles.
28. **Regulated / governed** – Subject to rules, authority, or formal control.
29. **Teachable / transmissible** – Can be learned, taught, or passed on.
30. **Visible** – Its existence or role is seen or publicly acknowledged.
31. **Context-sensitive** – Its behavior or meaning depends on environment or situation.
32. **Widely known** – Recognized or familiar to a large population or community.
